I'm a self-confessed scientific nerd. For years, I studied research articles, went to international conferences, even published a bunch of scientific articles, I became a chiropractic neurologist and even did the UNTHINKABLE. I went back to Palmer after 20 years to get a Master's Degree in Clinical Research. And not some mail-order, phoney-baloney Master's Degree. My Masters Degree was sponsored and paid for by the NIH!! Why? Because I had to figure something out.

Look, I had a good practice in Vicenza, Italy. I had 3 university based neurologist working in my office. EMG-NCV, Balance testing, the Infrared GOGGLES [which I am the one that discovered and brought those into chiropractic neurology, by the way]. We had a diabetologist, an anesthesiologist and a full rehab center. All of this in a country where chiropractic was 'not legal', but I felt depressed, "stuck." I couldn't do what I wanted to do with the 'little' knowledge I had accumulated. Because I was just a chiropractor, I could not get into the PhD program at the University of Verona or Padova. Even with my dual citizenship, and advanced degree the 'illegal' degree of "DC" was holding me back. And I had something to PROVE!!

I had developed some tools for diagnosising and treating tough peripheral neuropathy cases. I had even published research on it. But no one would listen. Most of the people I talked to were either trying to get money from me or steal my ideas or sell me some crap that they brought along.

In Italy we couldn't use any marketing stuff AT ALL! Not only were we 'illegal' it was even MORE ILLEGAL if you ADVERTISED in any way! I flourished in a system of SOCIALIZED MEDICINE! Yep, been there, done that. That.s why my system is SO UNIQUE! NOONE can tell you how to steer through the maze of health care reform like ME, someone that already DID IT! But I get ahead of myself.

Now most of what I see out in chiropractic as far as getting patients in the door and getting them better is junk, useless, silly and insulting. Or too complicated and difficult. Or required risking lots of money. I remember thinking then; if I ever actually PROVED what I was attempting to do and show it once and for all as 'REAL', I'd tell all chiropractors and make the whole world a better place.

I thought my 'system' was 'golden' until I tried it back in America for the first time. When I came back to Davenport for the second time to enter the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research, I realized that a whole lot had changed in the 10 years I was away as far as what it meant to be a chiropractor!

I was used to being paid CASH for my services. And my initial exam in Italy was 250 Euros, that equals about $400 for the first visit. I could not get over how polluted my profession had become by people who sucked on insurance companies without delivering anything of value, like getting sick people better and being respected for the great service you offer. And it looked like I was the only doctor telling people that they had to pay real money, out-of-pocket that's right, to get better.

At the same time I was going to school full time, trying to start a practice from scratch, my 'buddy' in Italy who purchased my practice decided after making 2 payments that he didn't want it anymore! Well wasn't that a kick in the crotch. There was no way I was going to give up on my dream for a lawsuit in a foreign countries court system that was only going to suck more money out of my dwindling account.


Things were getting tight without that monthly check. Sure I got paid a stipend from school, but let.s just say my 'fashionista' wife and four growing kids were not happy with my sudden decline in income! To make matters worse, my then wife decide to become my ex-wife and moved the kids and all our stuff back to my fully paid off, no-mortgage-to-pay dream home on the lake in upstate New York. And she got to kick out the renters who were paying us! So I was left with a house payment in Iowa, child support, my ex's credit card bills going ever higher-- so you can tell how far down I was when I made my "discovery," so you can see that anybody can do what I've done. I even had to sleep in my van when I went to conferences!! I was reduced to living0 in the basement of the schools librarian whose dogs would pee on my shoes! I was one step away from homeless. I went from a "young, brilliant, successful guy with a great practice" to an embarrassment to my family, a 'joke' to my colleagues and a friend that no one wanted to talk to. Now mind you, I had no yellow page ad, no internet nothing, no name on the door and when my big marketing piece hit - the phone number I had picked only worked local for Tucson!!

Not at all! I had people trying to call me for 2 weeks before they finally figured out how to get in touch with me!! I scheduled over 60 new patient visits from that first ad! By the way, I was working the office entirely by myself on the days that my friend was not working so I was answering the phone, examining, treating, rescheduling, collecting money. The next month, over 70 new patients. The next over 90 new patients. The next over 100 new patients. Actually, 267 for the first four months.

We scheduled over 417 new patients in the first 6 months of opening that office. And after that, I made enough money put everything on HOLD to take a one month vacation back to Italy!
